Compare Money Transfer Cost From Qatar: Rate Margin and Fees
A calculator that compares what your family receives from different Qatar banks and exchange houses once the exchange rate margin and fees are counted against the real rate.

Most people compare transfer fees and ignore the exchange rate, even though the rate often costs more. This page uses the quotes you enter, so it needs no live data and cannot be out of date. Our guide to sending money abroad from Qatar explains the options, and the guide to the Qatari riyal explains the peg. This is an estimate, not financial advice.
Compare your quotes
Find the mid-market rate on a currency converter. It is the rate with no margin added. Then enter each provider's rate and fees.
How the cost is worked out
- **Fees.** The fixed fee plus any percentage fee, taken from the amount you send.
- **Rate margin.** The difference between the mid-market rate and the rate you are offered, valued in riyals on the full amount.
- **True cost.** What your family receives, compared with the amount at the mid-market rate with no fees, converted back to riyals.
A worked example with made-up numbers
You send QAR 1,000 and the mid-market rate is 22.5 units of the other currency per riyal. Provider A offers 22.0 with a QAR 10 fee. Provider B offers 22.4 with a 0.5% fee, which is QAR 5.
| Provider | Sent after fees | Rate | Received |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | QAR 990 | 22.0 | 21,780 |
| B | QAR 995 | 22.4 | 22,288 |
Provider B costs less even though its fee is a percentage, because its rate is much closer to the real rate. The difference is 508 units, worth about QAR 22.6. These figures are invented to show the method and are not real quotes.
Why the dollar is different
The riyal is fixed to the US dollar at QAR 3.64, according to Qatar Central Bank's exchange rate policy, so for dollars the mid-market rate is steady at about 0.2747 USD per riyal. For other currencies the rate moves daily, so use a fresh rate each time.
Before you send
1. Ask each provider for the total your family will receive, not just the fee.
2. Check how long the transfer takes and how the recipient collects it.
3. Be careful with unlicensed agents. If someone offers a far better rate than every bank, ask why.
4. Keep the receipt. Our guide to pending bank transfers explains what to do if one stalls.
5. Send what you can afford. If your pay is short or late, see salary delayed in Qatar.
What we could not verify
- Live exchange rates and provider fees, which change daily and are not fetched here.
- Any limits or taxes that apply to transfers from Qatar.
- How each provider sets its margin.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the cheapest way to send money from Qatar?
Compare what the recipient actually receives, not the fee. Enter each quote with the mid-market rate in the calculator, and it shows which provider delivers the most.
What is a mid-market rate?
It is the real exchange rate between two currencies with no margin added, shown on a currency converter. Providers usually offer a slightly worse rate, and the difference is their margin.
Is the Qatari riyal fixed against the dollar?
Yes. Qatar Central Bank keeps it at QAR 3.64 per US dollar, so the dollar rate is steady. Rates for other currencies move daily.
