Cost of Living in Qatar: What to Actually Expect
Real rent ranges by neighborhood, what a single person versus a family actually spends, and why the tax-free salary changes the math.

Cost of living is the question new arrivals ask first, and most answers online are unsourced averages. This guide was rewritten in September 2026 to separate what official data shows from commonly cited estimates that we could not verify. Where a figure is an estimate, we say so, because rents and school fees change and vary by area and by building.
What official data shows
The National Planning Council publishes Qatar's consumer price index. Trading Economics, which reproduces it, reported the index at 110.12 in June 2026, up from 110.05 in May, with year-on-year inflation of about 2.2 percent. In plain terms, prices rose modestly over the year. This is an average across all goods, so your own costs can rise faster or slower, especially rent. We could not read the National Planning Council's own release, and we did not find the index weights on the page we checked, so we do not publish a breakdown by spending group. Check the National Planning Council's website for newer months and for category figures.
Housing: the number that moves everything
Commonly cited estimates from cost-of-living sites, which we could not verify or date, put a one-bedroom apartment in central Doha at roughly QAR 6,200 to 9,500 a month, and QAR 4,000 to 6,000 further out. Three-bedroom homes are cited at roughly QAR 11,300 to 15,000 centrally and QAR 8,500 to 13,000 further out, with West Bay and The Pearl at the higher end. Treat these as a starting range only.
Compare any estimate with real listings for your target area before you commit. If your employer gives a housing allowance, check whether it is fixed or tied to your lease. For how a lease is registered and what to do if there is a dispute, see our guide to renting an apartment in Qatar, and for areas to consider, our guide to the best neighborhoods in Qatar.
Utilities
Electricity and water are billed by Kahramaa. Air conditioning can raise your electricity bill in summer, which is general experience rather than an official figure, so ask your building management or current residents for a summer bill before you sign. See our guide to setting up a Kahramaa account and paying your bill.
Transport
Doha Metro and buses are an alternative to owning a car. Our Doha Metro guide covers fares and lines. If you do drive, budget for insurance, registration, and fines. See our guides to car insurance in Qatar and checking traffic fines.
Groceries and eating out
Prices vary by store and by how much you buy imported goods, and we do not publish shelf prices because they change often. Our guide to supermarkets in Qatar compares the main chains and explains your rights on expired food.
Families and school fees
Estimates cited for a couple without children run at roughly QAR 180,000 to 300,000 a year, and QAR 250,000 to 450,000 for a family with two school-age children, largely because of international school fees and a larger home. These are unverified. Each school sets and publishes its own fees, so ask the school directly. See our guide to international schools in Qatar.
Salary and tax
Hukoomi's Qatar's Tax System article, dated January 2023, says there is no tax on personal income, so employees take home their wages and salaries with no tax deducted, while business income and rental income can be taxed. See our guide to income tax in Qatar. The legal floor for private sector pay is set by the minimum wage law. See our guide to the Qatar minimum wage.
Build your own budget
This is our practical method, not official advice.
- List fixed costs first: rent or allowance, utilities, transport, insurance, and school fees.
- Add groceries and eating out based on your own habits.
- Keep a buffer for summer utility bills and one-off costs such as the deposit and moving. See our guide to moving companies in Qatar.
- Check your salary against the housing allowance before you shortlist areas.
- Recheck your budget after two months, when you know your real bills.
Common mistakes
- Budgeting from a single average without checking live listings.
- Forgetting the deposit, moving, and setup costs in the first month.
- Not budgeting for summer electricity.
- Choosing a school after choosing a home, when fees are often the largest single cost.
What we could not verify
- The National Planning Council's July and August 2026 inflation figures.
- The date and source of the commonly cited rent and family cost ranges.
- Current school fees, which each school sets.
- How income tax rules apply to your situation beyond Hukoomi's 2023 article.
