ATM Kept Your Card in Qatar? What to Do Right Away
What to do in the first minutes when a Qatar ATM keeps your bank card, what CBQ's own page says about collecting or replacing it, and how to escalate.

Watching an ATM keep your card is stressful, and the first few minutes matter because a card that is out of your hands can be misused. This guide gives the steps to take, and it explains what we could verify from a bank's own published procedure. We could confirm one bank's rules, so anything about other banks is general advice, and we say so. We reviewed the page in September 2026.
Why an ATM keeps a card
We found no official Qatar list of the reasons. This is our analysis of common causes: an expired or damaged card, too many wrong PIN attempts, a machine fault, or a card left in the machine after a timeout. The screen or the printed slip may say which one applies, so read it before you walk away.
What to do in the first hour
- Read the ATM screen and take a photo of it, the machine's ID or location sign, and any receipt.
- Write down the exact time and the address or name of the branch or site.
- Call your bank's card line. It is usually printed in your banking app, on the bank's website, or on a statement.
- Tell the bank the card was kept by an ATM, where and when, and ask it to block the card if there is any doubt about where it is.
- Check your account for transactions you do not recognize, and report them at once.
- Never share your PIN or a one-time code with anyone who offers help, even someone who says they are from the bank. This is our analysis, but the risk is real.
What CBQ says
CBQ's page on lost, stolen, or captured cards separates two cases.
- At a CBQ ATM: you receive an SMS with the location of the CBQ branch where your captured card will be available for collection within 2 to 3 working days, and you may book an appointment to collect it. As an alternative, you can block the captured card and request a replacement through the bank's digital channels.
- At another bank's ATM in Qatar or overseas: CBQ recommends that you block your card immediately and request a replacement.
- Ways to block: CBQ lists Internet Banking, the mobile app under Card Services, and its contact centre on 44495095, option 2.
- Fees: CBQ says courier charges apply for an overseas replacement delivery.
If your bank is not CBQ
We could not verify a published procedure for other Qatar banks. Follow the general steps above, ask your bank whether the card can be collected or must be replaced, and ask how long each takes. If the bank cannot say, ask for the answer in writing.
Collect or replace?
This is our analysis. If the ATM belongs to your own bank and the bank confirms the card is in its hands, collecting it may be fine, but replacing it is safer if you cannot be sure who handled it. If the card was kept by another bank's ATM, or you are unsure, blocking and replacing is the safer choice, and it matches CBQ's advice.
If cash was also affected
If the machine kept your card and also debited money you did not receive, tell the bank at the same time and ask it to investigate. Give the transaction time, the amount, and the ATM location. We found no official time limit for these investigations, so ask for a case number and a date for the answer.
If your bank does not resolve it
Qatar Central Bank's Customer Protection Department receives complaints about financial institutions. It lists the email [email protected], a complaints line on 8000700, and in-person service at Qatar Central Bank in West Bay, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Try your bank's complaint process first, keep the case number, and then go to QCB. Our guide to pending bank transfers explains the same route in more detail.
What to have ready
- Your Qatar ID and the card or account details you know.
- The ATM location, date, and time, and photos of the screen and receipt.
- The bank's case number for the report.
Real problems people run into
- I left before I could read the message. Call the bank anyway, give the location and time, and ask whether the ATM logged the retention.
- I am traveling and the ATM is abroad. Block the card and ask for a replacement. CBQ says overseas replacements may carry courier charges.
- I cannot get through to the bank. Use the app to block the card, since CBQ lists that option, and keep trying the phone line.
- I need cash today. Ask your bank about alternatives, such as a branch withdrawal or a temporary card. We found no official rule, so this depends on the bank.
If your account is later restricted, see our guide to a frozen or blocked bank account. If you are still setting up banking, see how to open a bank account in Qatar.
What we could not verify
- Any procedure for banks other than CBQ.
- Official reasons an ATM keeps a card in Qatar.
- Time limits for investigating cash that was debited but not dispensed.
- What ID a bank asks for to release a captured card.
