Qatar ID (QID): Renewal, Replacement, and Everything Else to Know
When to renew your Qatar ID, what it costs to replace a lost one, and what actually happens if you let it expire.

Your Qatar ID, or QID, is tied to your residence permit, so most QID questions are really residence permit questions. This guide was rewritten in September 2026 from Hukoomi's Ministry of Interior services. We mark figures from news reports and figures we could not confirm.
How renewal works
Hukoomi's Renew Residence Permit For Expatriates service says the Ministry of Interior allows individuals and companies to renew residence permits for 1 to 3 years, for Qataris, residents, and companies holding Qatari Smart ID Cards. Its online steps are:
1. Log in with your smartcard to the MOI e-services portal.
2. Click Residency, then Renew Residency.
3. Select the QID number to renew. Individuals can select a maximum of five numbers at a time, and companies twenty.
4. Choose the renewal period.
5. Choose how you will receive the new residence permit.
6. Pay the applicable fees.
Hukoomi says the system shows the rejection reason for any personal number in the Status box, and that you can also renew through Metrash. Renewal can be made 3 months before the expiry date.
Renewal fees
| Who is sponsored | Fee |
|---|---|
| Wife, children, and family sponsorships | QR500 |
| Employees sponsored by companies, institutions, and shops | QR1,000 |
| Employees on personal sponsorships, servants, farmers, and sailors | QR300 |
Hukoomi lists a 20 percent discount for a three-year renewal for personal sponsorship, companies, wife, children, and family sponsorship, and an extra QR20 if you choose Qatar Post delivery. If you apply offline, you attach a copy of the employer's valid ID for personal sponsorships, or the establishment ID for companies and government bodies, and submit to the Expatriates Affairs Department.
Who starts the renewal
Because the service is built around sponsors selecting QID numbers, the person who normally starts renewal is your sponsor, commonly your employer's PRO. Ask them to confirm the renewal has begun rather than assuming, and check the status in Metrash. Our guide to Qatar visa types explains how your permit connects to your employer. For long-term status, see our guide to permanent residency in Qatar.
Lost or damaged QID
A lost or damaged card is a different service from renewal. Hukoomi lists a fee of QR200, plus QR20 for mail courier delivery, and says you must be inside Qatar to apply. A lost card also needs a security notification. See our full guide to replacing a lost or damaged Qatar ID. We removed processing times we could not source, so we do not quote a number of days.
If your QID has expired
Reports in 2026 say the Ministry of Interior shortened the period you may remain in Qatar after a permit expires or is cancelled to 14 days, with a fine of QR10 per day after that, and older guidance described up to 90 days. We could not confirm either on an official page, so treat the expiry date as your deadline. See our guide to what to do when your Qatar ID has expired.
Renewing while you are abroad
Hukoomi's page describes renewal by a sponsor selecting QID numbers, and does not say whether the holder must be in Qatar. We could not confirm the position for someone who is abroad, so ask your PRO before you travel close to expiry. Also check the passport validity that your embassy and the ministry require, since we could not confirm a required minimum on the official page.
Common problems
- My address is missing or wrong. See our guide to a national address that is not updated.
- My employer has not renewed my permit and the date is close. Ask the PRO for the status and check Metrash. The status box shows a rejection reason if there is one.
- My card is lost. Use the replacement service, not renewal, and see our lost QID guide.
- My bank or another service says my QID has expired. See our guides to an expired QID and your first week in Qatar.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until the expiry date to start the renewal, when Hukoomi allows it 3 months earlier.
- Assuming a grace period exists.
- Confusing renewal with replacement of a lost card.
- Not checking the status box for a rejection reason.
What we could not verify
- The current grace period after a permit expires.
- Whether a holder can be abroad when the renewal is filed.
- Any required minimum passport validity for renewal.
- Processing times for renewal or replacement.
