Qatar Work Permit Delayed? What Employees Can Check and Do
Why an employee usually cannot check a Qatar work permit alone, how the employer checks its application on Hukoomi, and what to do when the wait drags on.

A delayed work permit is stressful because you may not be able to start work, change jobs, or plan your move. The key fact is that you are usually not the applicant. This guide explains what the official pages say, what you can do as an employee, and what we could not verify. We read the Hukoomi service pages in September 2026 and found no official processing time, so this page does not give one.
Who files the work permit application
Hukoomi describes the status service as one for employers who have filed an application to hire foreign workers. That tells you who holds the application details. If you are the employee, the person who can look it up is your employer, or the company's PRO or HR contact.
What an employer can check
Hukoomi's View Work Permit Department Applications Status page says an employer can check the status online by entering the application number, the year of the application, and the establishment ID, then selecting Search. The page says no fee is required.
This is why the first useful step for you is to ask the employer for those three items. We did not find a list of statuses or an official explanation of each one, so we cannot tell you what a particular status means.
What you can do as an employee
- Ask your employer or HR contact, in writing, for the application number, the year, and the date it was filed.
- Ask whether the employer has checked the status, and what the result shows.
- Ask whether anything is missing, such as a document or a payment.
- Keep your offer letter, contract, and every message about the permit.
- Do not pay anyone outside your employer to speed it up. We found no official fee that an employee must pay for this step.
Check the related steps
A work permit is often one step among several. Your visa, medical test, and residence permit each have their own status. If your entry visa is the pending item, see our guide to a visa application under process. If the medical examination is the pending item, see our guide to Medical Commission appointment problems.
When to contact the Ministry or Hukoomi
If your employer cannot give you the details, or says everything is fine and nothing moves, you can escalate.
- The Hukoomi status page lists the Ministry of Labour on 16505 or 44068979 for more information. Confirm the current numbers on the Ministry's website before you call.
- Hukoomi support lists 109 in Qatar, or +974 4406 9999, and an online support ticket. See our guide to the Hukoomi support ticket for how to submit and follow one.
- When you call, say that you are the employee, give your name, the employer's name, and the application number if you have it. The Ministry may only discuss the details with the employer, and we could not verify what it will tell an employee.
If the delay affects your job or pay
If the delay means unpaid wages, see our guides to salary delayed in Qatar and how to file a labor complaint. If you want to leave the employer, see our guide to changing jobs in Qatar. For a wider overview of your rights, see Qatar labor law and worker rights.
What to keep as evidence
- The offer letter, contract, and any signed copies.
- The application number, year, and filing date.
- Screenshots or messages that show what the employer told you, with dates.
- Your passport and any entry or residence documents.
Common mistakes
- Waiting silently. Ask for the application number early, since it is the key to every check.
- Assuming you can check the status yourself. The Hukoomi page we read is for employers.
- Paying agents who promise a faster permit. We found no official basis for such a payment.
- Mixing up the steps. A pending visa, medical result, and work permit are different things.
What we could not verify
- Any official processing time for a work permit.
- The meaning of individual application statuses.
- Whether the Ministry of Labour will discuss an application with an employee directly.
- How current the Ministry contact numbers on the Hukoomi page are.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check my own work permit status in Qatar?
The Hukoomi status service we read is written for employers, and it needs the application number, year, and establishment ID. Ask your employer for those details.
How long does a Qatar work permit take?
We found no official processing time, so we do not give one. Ask your employer when it was filed and what the status shows.
Who do I contact if my employer will not help?
Hukoomi lists the Ministry of Labour on 16505 or 44068979 for more information, and Hukoomi support on 109. Confirm the numbers before you call.
Should I pay someone to speed up my work permit?
We found no official fee that an employee must pay for this step. Be careful with anyone who asks for money to speed it up.
What if the delay stops my salary?
See our guides to delayed salary and labor complaints, and keep your contract and messages as evidence.
Is my work permit the same as my residence permit?
They are separate steps with separate statuses. A pending work permit, visa, medical result, or residence permit each needs its own check.
