Qatar Visa Extension Ended in June 2026: What Visitors Must Do Now
Qatar stopped extending expired or nearly expired entry visas from 7 June 2026. What changed, what the Ministry of Interior asks visitors to do, the reported overstay fine and where to check your own status.

During the early months of 2026, Qatar let people with expired or nearly expired entry visas stay on without the usual steps. That ended in June. If you came on a visit visa, or you are helping a relative who did, you need to know what rules apply now. This guide uses reports from The Peninsula, Qatar Tribune and Khaleej Times, plus our own overstay guide. The ministry's statement is the final word, and we did not find a list of fees in the news reports. It is general information, not legal advice.
What changed on 7 June 2026?
The Ministry of Interior announced on 28 May 2026 that it would stop extending entry visas that were expired or close to expiry, from 7 June 2026. The decision covers all categories of entry visa and applies to residents, visitors and others concerned, according to Qatar Tribune. All approved rules on validity periods, renewal requirements and fees are enforced again. Sources differ on when the temporary measure began: one says 28 February and another says 3 March.
What does the ministry want you to do?
The ministry urged people to regularize their status in one of three ways:
1. Renew the visa within the required timeframe.
2. Pay the required fees.
3. Leave the country before the visa expires.
It warned that anyone who stays beyond the permitted period may face legal penalties under the immigration regulations. The news reports do not list the penalties.
How much is the overstay fine?
Gulf Times reported in June 2026 that a visit visa overstay costs QAR 200 a day, which matches the figure in our overstay fine calculator. A travel blog adds a cap of QAR 12,000 and says you cannot leave before paying, but that is a secondary source. Use the calculator for a rough number, and confirm the real amount with the ministry.
How to renew a visit visa under the normal rules
The news reports give no step by step process. Our guide to visit visa extension in Qatar explains the usual route, with the reported fee and steps, and notes where sources differ. A travel blog says a tourist visa can be extended once for 30 days, at QAR 200 for the month, through the MOI portal or Metrash. We could not confirm that on an official page. Apply before the visa expires, not after.
If your visa has already expired
1. Open Metrash and check the exact expiry date of your visa.
2. Do not leave it for later. Every day adds a reported QAR 200.
3. Ask your sponsor or host to start a renewal if one is still possible.
4. If you plan to leave, check for a block first. See how to check a travel ban, and use the MOI financial claims service to see if any fees or fines are owed.
5. Keep all receipts and your passport stamp.
Residents are not the same as visitors
The June 2026 news is about entry visas. A resident has a different clock: 14 days after a residence permit is cancelled or expires, then QAR 10 a day, as reported. See cancelled QID or visa: can you reactivate it and the expiry date planner.
Coming to Qatar now
Check your entry conditions before you fly. See visa free entry, visa on arrival and Hayya and types of Qatar visas. The permitted stay is shown on your entry sticker or stamp, so count from that date, not from the day you landed. Gulf Times reported that the permitted stay is shown there.
