Qatar Family Visa: Sponsorship Guide
Exactly what you need to sponsor a spouse or children in Qatar, from the salary threshold to the documents most people forget.

Sponsoring a spouse and children is one of the most searched residency topics, and also one where unofficial figures circulate widely. This guide was rewritten in September 2026 from Hukoomi's Residence and Work Permits article, dated April 2023, and Hukoomi's residence permit services. We mark every figure we could not confirm on an official page.
Who can sponsor
Hukoomi's article says residents who hold a work residence permit can sponsor their immediate family, meaning spouse, sons, and daughters, and that every family member, including infants, must hold an individual Family Residence Visa. It says the visa can be bought for a period of 1 to 5 years and is stamped on each family member's passport.
Documents Hukoomi lists
Hukoomi's article says applicants must submit a number of documents, including:
- Authenticated marriage certificate.
- Authenticated birth certificates for children.
- A no-objection letter from your employer.
- A salary certificate from your employer.
The article says these are among the documents required, not the complete list, so ask the Ministry of Interior or your employer's PRO for the full checklist for your case.
The salary threshold: what we could not confirm
Many websites quote minimum salary figures for sponsorship, and reports mention a December 2023 update from the Ministry of Interior with different figures for government and private sector employees and for those with or without company accommodation. We did not find those figures on any official page we could read, and the figures differ by source, so we do not publish them. Ask your HR or the Ministry of Interior for the current criteria, and get your salary confirmed in writing before you apply.
Accommodation
Some sources say sponsors need a family-suitable home and an attested tenancy contract, and that shared or company bachelor housing may not qualify. The Hukoomi article we read does not list an accommodation document, so we treat this as reported, not confirmed. If you rent, see our guide to renting an apartment in Qatar for how leases are authenticated and registered.
Attestation
Marriage and birth certificates issued abroad usually need attestation before an authority accepts them. Hukoomi says the certificates must be authenticated. The exact chain, such as your home foreign ministry and the Qatari embassy, depends on your country, so ask the embassy. It can take weeks, so start early.
Applying
Hukoomi's page for the Ministry of Interior residence permit service describes applying through the Metrash app, by logging in with your QID and password, choosing Residency, then Residency procedures, then Residence Permit, choosing personal or company, selecting the sponsored person, and submitting. That service is described for permits needing approval from the Expatriate Affairs Department, for example because of a passport, fingerprint, or medical test issue, and Hukoomi lists no fee for the request itself. We did not find a Hukoomi page giving the step-by-step for a first-time family application, so confirm the current steps with the ministry. Initial issuance fees quoted online, such as QR200 per dependent, are not on the official pages we read.
Renewing your family's residence permits
Hukoomi's Renew Residence Permit service says the Ministry of Interior lets individuals and companies renew residence permits for 1 to 3 years. It lists fees of QR500 for a wife, children, and family sponsorships, and a 20 percent discount for a three-year renewal. Renewal can be made 3 months before expiry, and an individual can renew up to five QID numbers at a time. Choosing Qatar Post delivery adds QR20. You can also renew through Metrash.
Family visit or family residence?
A short visit is a different process. See our guide to sponsoring a family or friend visit visa, and our overview of Qatar visa types.
A woman on family sponsorship who wants to work
Hukoomi's article says a woman in Qatar on family sponsorship who has her husband's approval may register to work without obtaining a separate work permit.
Timeline
We found no official processing time for a family residence application, and it depends on your case and the ministry's workload. Complete documents help. If your own permit is still being processed, see our guide to a delayed work permit.
Common mistakes
- Relying on a salary figure from a website instead of asking the ministry or HR.
- Forgetting that infants need their own residence visa.
- Starting attestation late.
- Confusing a family visit visa with a family residence visa.
- Missing the renewal window. Renew from 3 months before expiry.
What we could not verify
- The current minimum salary and accommodation criteria for sponsorship.
- The first-time application steps and fees for a family residence visa.
- Whether parents can be sponsored, since sources differ.
- Processing times.
