Types of Qatar Visas, Explained

Tourist, business, family visit, work, and family residence: which Qatar visa applies to you, where each is applied for, and the fees and limits the official pages state.

Types of Qatar Visas, Explained
Quick answer
Qatar's Ministry of Interior issues entry visas by purpose: tourist, business, family, and student. Tourist and GCC-related visas are applied for on the Hayya platform, with codes A1 to A4 and F1. A business visa through a Qatari mission costs QR200 and allows a one-month stay, extendable to three. Living and working here needs a work residence permit through a Qatari employer.

Most confusion about Qatar visas comes from mixing up an entry visa, which lets you visit, with a residence permit, which lets you live here. This guide is rebuilt from Hukoomi's official pages and the Ministry of Interior's visit visa portal, which we read in September 2026. Several of those pages are dated 2021 to 2023, so we flag dates and tell you what to confirm.

Tourist and GCC visas through Hayya

Hukoomi's page on the Hayya platform says a user can apply for the Tourist Visa (A1), GCC Resident Visa (A2), Visa with ETA (A3), Visa for Companions of GCC Citizens (A4), and Visa-Free for US Citizens (F1). Its steps are:

1. Open the Hayya platform and click Start Your E-Visa Journey, then Flying to Qatar.

2. Select your country of nationality, say whether you are a GCC resident, and answer the questions. The system shows the recommended visa for you.

3. Log in or create a Hayya account.

4. Upload the documents listed for your visa.

5. Submit and pay the fee. Hukoomi says fees are variable.

Your visa is sent to your registered email. For questions, Hukoomi lists 2022 from inside Qatar, +974 44412022 from outside, and [email protected], with support in Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu, and Tagalog.

An older claim to treat carefully

A Hukoomi article dated August 2021 says citizens of over 102 approved countries could get a tourist visa on arrival, that the Ministry of Interior required a hotel booking made through the Discover Qatar website, and that some nationalities paid nothing while others paid QR100. Because that article predates the current Hayya platform, do not rely on it for your trip. Use Hayya's questionnaire for your nationality instead, which shows the visa it recommends.

Health insurance to enter

The Ministry of Interior's visit visa portal states that a valid health insurance policy from insurers registered with the Ministry of Public Health is required to enter Qatar. It also says visitors arriving by car through the Abu Samra border must complete the required insurance policies electronically and can pre-register through Hayya. Arrange cover before you travel.

Business visa through a Qatari mission

Hukoomi's page for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs service says a business visa lets businesspeople enter Qatar to look for investment opportunities. It lists a fee of QR200, a passport valid for at least six months, and two photos. The page adds that:

  • The visa is issued to all nationalities within 24 hours of entering the applicant's information through an automated system.
  • It is valid for three months from issue, and you must enter before it expires.
  • You may stay one month from the entry date. It can be extended for a similar period, up to a maximum of three months.
  • You must show documents proving you are a businessperson, unless you are a well-known business figure to the mission head or a consular official.

Family visit visas

Hukoomi's Extend Visa page says people traveling on tourist, business, or other extendable visas can extend by applying to the Ministry of Interior at QR200 per month, and that for family visits, extension requires a medical and fingerprint check. See our guide to sponsoring a family or friend visit visa for what we could and could not confirm.

Work residence permit

Hukoomi's Residence and Work Permits article, dated April 2023, says everyone who wants to work and live in Qatar needs a Work Residence Permit, for which they need a Qatari employer, an individual or a company. It says the employer usually handles the paperwork, arranges a temporary visa when you first enter, and then converts it to a work residence permit, a process that typically takes 2 to 4 weeks and sometimes longer. It says applicants may not leave the country during that conversion.

The same article says work residence permits are renewed annually by the employer, but the Ministry of Interior's own Renew Residence Permit service, on Hukoomi, says the ministry allows renewals of 1 to 3 years, with renewal possible 3 months before expiry. Check the validity printed on your own permit. Once you hold the permit, you can use many other services, such as signing a rental agreement or applying for a loan. See our guides to a delayed work permit and your first week in Qatar.

Family residence visas

Hukoomi's article says residents can sponsor their immediate family, spouse, sons, and daughters, and that every family member, including infants, must have an individual Family Residence Visa. It says the visa can be bought for 1 to 5 years and is stamped on each family member's passport. It lists authenticated marriage and birth certificates, a no-objection letter, and a salary certificate from the employer among the documents. For eligibility and the process, see our family visa sponsorship guide.

A woman in Qatar on family sponsorship who has her husband's approval may register to work without a separate work permit, according to the same article.

Student residence

Hukoomi's 2021 article says the Committee Reviewing Recruitment Applications at the Ministry of Interior grants an educational residence visa to expatriate students who want to complete their studies in Qatar. We did not read the application details, so check with your university.

Changing from a visit visa to a work permit

Many people ask whether they can switch from a visit or tourist visa to a work permit inside Qatar. The official pages we read do not answer this, and secondary sources disagree. Ask your employer's PRO for your specific case before you arrange travel or resign anywhere.

Which visa do you need?

This is our own practical summary.

  • Visiting for a holiday: a tourist visa through Hayya.
  • Visiting for business meetings: a business visit visa, or the visa the Hayya questionnaire recommends.
  • Visiting family who live in Qatar: a family visit visa arranged by the resident.
  • Moving for a job: a work residence permit through your employer.
  • Bringing your family to live with you: a family residence visa, after your own permit is issued.

Common mistakes

  • Treating an entry visa as permission to live or work in Qatar.
  • Using an old guide's list of visa-on-arrival countries instead of Hayya's current questionnaire.
  • Traveling without health insurance that the Ministry of Interior requires.
  • Leaving the country while a visa is being converted to a work residence permit.
  • Forgetting that each family member, including infants, needs an individual residence visa.

What we could not verify

  • The current list of nationalities that qualify for each Hayya visa type, and the exact fees.
  • Whether a visit visa can be changed to a work permit inside Qatar.
  • The exact validity of your own work residence permit, since Hukoomi's 2023 article and the ministry's renewal service describe different periods.
  • Application details for the educational residence visa.
  • Whether the health insurance rule applies in every entry situation.
