Qatar Visa Application Under Process: What It Means and What to Do
Quick answer
Under process means your application has not reached a final decision. We found no official definition of that status and no official processing time, and unofficial sites quote very different ones. Check the status on the Ministry of Interior's Visa Inquiry page, ask your sponsor for the application reference, and use Metrash, 109, or the MOI directorate if it stalls.

Waiting on a visa is stressful, especially when a flight, a job start date, or your family depends on it. This guide explains what you can and cannot learn from an under process status, where to check it officially, and how to escalate if it stalls. It is based on Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Hukoomi pages we read in September 2026, and it says plainly what no official source tells you.

What an under process status tells you

The MOI Visa Inquiry and Printing page lets you look up a visa by visa number or passport number, together with your nationality and a captcha. The page we read gives no legend for the status wording, so we could not find an official definition of under process. Our reading is that it means the application is still with the authorities and has not reached a final result. That is our analysis, not an MOI statement.

There is also no official processing time to quote. Hukoomi's page for the MOI residence permit service lists a description, steps, and fees, but no service time. Unofficial sites quote everything from a few days to several weeks, and they disagree with each other, so we do not repeat their numbers.

Check this first

This section is our analysis.

  • Which application is it? An entry visa, a family visa, a visit visa, and a residence permit after arrival are different processes. Our guide to types of Qatar visas explains them.
  • Who applied? A sponsor, an employer's PRO, an agent, or you. Ask them for the application reference and the date it was submitted.
  • Do the details match? Check the visa number, passport number, name spelling, and nationality you enter on the inquiry page. A mismatch can return nothing.
  • Is anything missing? Expired passports, fingerprint problems, and medical test problems are listed by Hukoomi as reasons a residence permit may need extra approval, so check those first.

Where to check officially

  • MOI Visa Inquiry and Printing: enter the visa number or the passport number, choose your nationality, and complete the captcha.
  • MOI's inquiries menu also lists Residency Permits inquiry, Exit and Entry Permits inquiry, and Search and Follow up.
  • Metrash: residents with an account can use its residency procedures. If the app or your login is the problem, see our guide to Metrash problems.

If a residence permit is stuck

Hukoomi lists an MOI e-service called Issue Residence Permit Application through Metrash. It is for residence permits that need approval from the Expatriate Affairs Department for reasons such as passport expiry, fingerprint issues, or medical test issues. The page says no fees are required and that you need a registered Metrash account. It was published on 12 June 2022, so the app screens may have changed.

The steps it lists are: log in to Metrash with your QID number and password, choose Residency and then Residency procedures, select Residence Permit, choose Personal or Company, select the sponsored person, and confirm. In our reading, this is for cases that need extra approval. It is not a general way to speed up a normal application. For what happens after arrival, see our first week in Qatar checklist and our guide to the Qatar ID.

Escalate step by step

This order is our suggestion.

  • Step 1: Ask your sponsor or PRO for the application reference, what was submitted, and when. Get it in writing.
  • Step 2: Check the status yourself on the MOI inquiry page or in Metrash, and note the date and the wording.
  • Step 3: Contact MOI. Its contact page lists the Information Systems Department on 2342000, which is the number our Metrash guide describes as the app helpline, and the General Directorate of Borders, Passports and Expatriates Affairs on 44890333 or [email protected]. That page shows a 2021 copyright, so confirm the numbers are current.
  • Step 4: Call 109, the government hotline for e-service problems, or raise a Hukoomi request. Our guide to tracking and escalating a Hukoomi request explains that route.
  • Step 5: If the application is later refused, see our guide to rejected visa applications.

A message to your sponsor

Keep it short and dated: "Hello, could you please send me the application reference for my visa, the date it was submitted, and the visa or passport number used? The MOI inquiry page shows under process. Please tell me whether anything is needed from me and who is following it up. Thank you." Save the reply. If the answer is vague, ask again after two working days.

What to have ready

  • Your passport number, visa number, and nationality as they appear in the application.
  • The application reference and submission date from your sponsor.
  • A screenshot of the status with the date visible.
  • Your Qatar ID number, if you already have one.

If you have travel plans

We found no official statement on how airlines or border staff treat a visa that shows under process. This is our advice: ask your sponsor and your airline what they need before you travel, and avoid non-refundable bookings until the visa is issued.

Beware of paid shortcuts

The MOI inquiry page is public, so you do not need to pay anyone to see a status. No agent can guarantee a faster decision. Never share a one-time code or your Metrash password with an agent.

Real problems people run into

  • The visa is approved but the work permit or medical is pending. See our guides to a delayed work permit and Medical Commission appointment problems.
  • The status has not changed for weeks. Ask your sponsor for the reference number, then follow the steps above in order.
  • The inquiry page finds nothing. Recheck the numbers and nationality, and ask your sponsor which number was issued.
  • My employer just says wait. It is fair to ask what was submitted and on what date.
  • I am waiting on a family visa. See our family visa sponsorship guide for the requirements that most often hold it up.
  • The residence permit is stuck after arrival. Check whether it is a passport, fingerprint, or medical issue, and see our guide to an expired residence permit if time is running out.

What we could not verify

  • Any official definition of under process or other status wording.
  • Any official processing time for any visa type.
  • How airlines treat a pending status.
  • Whether the MOI contact numbers are current, since the page shows a 2021 copyright.
