Cancelled Qatar ID or Visa: Can You Reactivate It or Come Back?
Why a Qatar ID or residence permit gets cancelled, how long you can stay, whether it can be reactivated, why you cannot simply transfer to a new employer, and what the 2015 residency law says about returning.

A cancelled QID is stressful because three questions run together: how long can I stay, can I undo it, and can I come back. The answers depend on why it was cancelled, and the rules changed in 2026. This guide separates them, using Gulf Times, KPMG, a Vialto alert, a 2018 Peninsula report and an abstract of the 2015 residency law. We could not read the law's Arabic text and some of the sources are old or second-hand, so confirm your case with the Ministry of Interior. It is general information, not legal advice.
Why a QID or permit gets cancelled
- **Your sponsor cancels it.** Only the sponsor, an employer, its PRO or a family sponsor can cancel. See cancelling a residence permit when leaving for good and what a sponsor must do to cancel a family permit.
- **You were outside Qatar too long.** An abstract of Law No. 21 of 2015 says residency is lost if an expatriate stays outside Qatar for more than six months, with an exception for a re-entry permit requested before leaving, or within one year of departure, if applied for within sixty days of the permit's expiry.
- **The permit expired and was not renewed.** See what happens when a residence permit expires and renewing on Metrash.
- **An absconding report.** See what an absconding case means.
How long can you stay after cancellation?
| Source | Period |
|---|---|
| Gulf Times and KPMG, June 2026 | 14 days, down from 30, then QAR 10 a day |
| Older guides | 30 days |
| Law No. 21 of 2015, Article 24 (abstract) | 90 days |
The 90 day figure in the 2015 law abstract is where many older guides get their number. The 2026 reports describe a Ministry of Interior change, and the grace period reported as current is 14 days. Plan for 14 days. Our overstay fine calculator shows the cost of staying longer, and Vialto's alert adds that failing to leave in time may also lead to being blacklisted from future entry, with no duration given.
Can a cancelled permit be reactivated?
A 2018 Peninsula report says the Ministry of Interior added a service to issue and reactivate a residence permit through Metrash, and that reactivation needs a medical test but not fingerprinting. A procedure page we saw only as a search summary says the reactivate-by-QID service is for people whose residence was cancelled but who are still in the country within the legal period, done through the MOI portal with a smart card, with an SMS on approval. Both sources are old, and the 2026 guide we found says a new medical test is not routinely required for a renewal. So the answer is: it may be possible while you are still in Qatar and inside the allowed period, and your sponsor usually needs to act. Check the residency section of Metrash, or ask the Ministry of Interior, quickly, because the period is now short.
Why you cannot just switch employers
A search summary of a Vialto alert says that once a residence permit is cancelled, individuals must exit Qatar before transitioning to a new employer, because a local transfer is not permitted after cancellation, and a new application must be submitted from overseas. If you want to change jobs without leaving, the transfer has to happen before cancellation. See changing jobs in Qatar without an NOC.
Can you come back to Qatar?
The abstract of Law No. 21 of 2015 says a departing expatriate may return with approval from the competent authority if they meet the entry conditions (Article 24). It also says a worker who was dismissed and did not challenge the dismissal in court, or whose challenge was rejected, may not re-enter Qatar for work for four years from the departure date (Article 26). An older Gulf Times headline said the law lifted an earlier two-year re-entry ban. We could not read the Arabic text or later amendments, so do not treat the four year figure as current for your case. Ask the Ministry of Interior, and see how to check a travel ban, the work visa steps from abroad and how to check a work visa.
What to do in the first 14 days
1. Check the status on Metrash and note the cancellation date.
2. Ask your sponsor whether the cancellation can be reversed, and whether a transfer could still be done.
3. Pay fines and clear any travel ban. See checking and paying traffic fines.
4. Collect your final dues. See the final settlement calculator.
5. Book your flight inside the 14 days if you cannot reactivate.
6. Keep copies of the cancellation, your contract and your complaint if there is one. See labour disputes after the 2026 amendments.
What we could not verify
- The Ministry of Interior's current reactivation process. The sources we found are from 2018 and a procedure page seen only in summary.
- The Arabic text of Law No. 21 of 2015 and later amendments, including the four year entry restriction and the 90 day period.
- Whether the 14 day rule is permanent. Fragomen said this was unclear.
