Cancel a Family Member's Residence Permit in Qatar: What the Sponsor Must Do
How a sponsor cancels a wife's, child's or parent's residence permit on Metrash, what blocks a cancellation, the reported fees, and why the 14 day grace period changes your timing.

Cancelling a family permit is easy to do and hard to undo. It is usually done when a spouse or child leaves Qatar for good, or when a sponsor is moving jobs. This guide covers the steps, the blockers and the timing. It uses a DohaGuides guide updated on 15 March 2025, KPMG and Gulf Times reports on the 2026 grace period, and Hukoomi details quoted in our other guides. We could not open an official Metrash page for the cancellation screen, so confirm the steps in the app. It is general information, not legal advice.
Who can cancel a family permit?
DohaGuides says a resident cannot cancel their own Qatar ID. For a family visa, only the sponsor, the spouse or parent, can cancel. For an employment visa, it is the employer or its authorized representative. If you are the sponsor of your wife, children or parents, you cancel their permits. Our guide to family visa sponsorship explains how the sponsorship started. If you are leaving yourself, see cancelling your own residence permit when leaving for good.
The steps on Metrash
DohaGuides lists:
1. Log in to the Metrash app.
2. Select Residency Services.
3. Select Cancel Residency.
4. Enter the residence permit numbers to be cancelled.
5. Pay the fees online.
6. Print the payment receipt.
It says the QID is instantly cancelled at this stage, so use it only when you are sure. After cancelling, it says you can download and print an exit permit from the Ministry of Interior portal and check the QID status there. Our guide on whether you still need an exit permit covers the current rule.
What can block a cancellation?
DohaGuides says a cancellation is blocked if the person has active visas under the sponsorship, and these must be cancelled first. It also says a QID cannot be cancelled while a registered vehicle is under the holder's name, so the vehicle must be sold or transferred first. See vehicle ownership transfer in Qatar. We found no source on unpaid fines at cancellation, so check them anyway. See checking and paying traffic fines.
What does it cost?
DohaGuides lists offline fees of QAR 20 per person for personal sponsorship and QAR 50 for company sponsorship, and gives no separate online amount, only that you pay the appropriate fee online. We could not confirm these on an official page.
How long can the family stay afterward?
This is the point that changed. DohaGuides says the normal grace period after a cancellation is 30 days and for an expired permit 90 days. KPMG and Gulf Times report that in June 2026 the Ministry of Interior shortened the period to stay in Qatar after a permit is cancelled or expires to 14 days, down from 30, with a fine of QAR 10 a day after that. Gulf Times quotes an official at the Airport Passports Department. Trust the newer reports, and see what happens when a residence permit expires.
A safe order of tasks:
- Book flights first, for a date inside the 14 days.
- Cancel any active visas under the sponsorship.
- Sell or transfer any car and settle fines.
- Cancel the permit on Metrash on the day you can leave, not weeks earlier.
- Keep the receipt and the exit permit.
Children and newborns
Gulf Times reports that a newborn needs a residence permit under the father's sponsorship, or the baby may not be able to re-enter Qatar. See the newborn residence permit.
Do you need the QID to return?
DohaGuides says the QID is not mandatory to return and that an immigration officer may collect it at the airport, while someone using an e-gate can keep it. Treat this as reported, not as a rule.
What we could not verify
- The cancellation screen and fees on an official Metrash or Ministry of Interior page.
- Whether unpaid fines or other dues block a cancellation.
- Whether the 14 day period is permanent. Fragomen said it was unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Who can cancel a family member's residence permit in Qatar?
Only the sponsor. DohaGuides says a resident cannot cancel their own Qatar ID, and the sponsor, the spouse or parent for a family visa, cancels it.
How long can my family stay in Qatar after I cancel their permit?
Reports from June 2026 say 14 days, down from 30, with a QAR 10 daily fine after that. Older guides still say 30 days, so plan for 14.
Why can't I cancel my wife's residence permit?
DohaGuides says it is blocked if she has active visas under your sponsorship or a vehicle registered in her name. Cancel the visas and sell or transfer the vehicle first.
