Qatar ID Expired? What to Do and How to Renew It

If your Qatar ID has expired, renew it immediately. An expired QID does not just mean an out-of-date card. It is tied to your residence permit, so an expired card can trigger fines, block your bank account and SIM, and complicate travel and government services. The renewal itself is usually quick when your employer or sponsor is responsive, and you can start it online through the Metrash app or the Ministry of Interior portal.

This guide is about the expired situation specifically: what is actually at risk, how the fine rules are changing, and how to fix the most common reasons a renewal stalls. If you want the full background on how QIDs work, from first issue to replacement, read our complete Qatar ID guide alongside this one.

Quick answer: what to do today

  • Check the expiry date on your card and in your Metrash account.
  • Contact your employer's PRO or your sponsor and ask for the renewal status in writing.
  • If the renewal has not started, ask them to begin it now, or start it yourself if you can log in to Metrash.
  • Keep your passport, current QID, and any renewal receipt with you.
  • Do not travel until you have confirmed your status.

What counts as an expired Qatar ID

Your QID card and your residence permit are closely linked. When the permit's validity ends, the card is treated as expired. That is different from a cancelled residence permit, which happens when your employer or sponsor ends your residency, for example after you resign. And it is different from a renewal that is in progress, where you may have a submitted application but no new card yet. Knowing which situation you are in tells you how urgent it is. If your permit was cancelled rather than expired, read our guide on what happens when a residence permit expires or ends.

Fines and grace periods, and why the numbers keep changing

This is the part most guides get wrong, because the rules have moved. Older guidance described a renewal window of up to 90 days after expiry with no automatic penalty, followed by a fine of QAR 10 per day up to a cap of QAR 6,000. More recently, reports in mid-2026 said the Ministry of Interior shortened the period you may remain in Qatar after a residence permit expires or is cancelled to 14 days, with a fine of QAR 10 per day after that.

Because these figures have shifted and different sources still quote different numbers, do not plan around any grace period. Treat the expiry date as the deadline. Check the current position in the Metrash app or the MOI portal, where fines and status are shown for your own QID, and renew before the card expires whenever you can.

What you cannot easily do with an expired QID

An expired ID is commonly reported to create friction almost everywhere. We did not find an official list of what an expired card blocks, so treat the items below as commonly reported effects, and check with each provider.

  • Banking. Online banking and card transactions can be blocked or limited until you present a valid ID. See our guide on what to do if your bank account is frozen.
  • Your mobile line. Providers can restrict a number when the ID behind it is no longer valid.
  • Health care. Government health services use your QID, and an expired one can affect access and subsidies. See our guide on renewing your health card.
  • Travel. Leaving or re-entering Qatar with an expired permit can lead to delays or penalties.
  • Rentals and utilities. Landlords and service providers often ask for a valid QID.
  • Digital government services. Some Metrash and Tawtheeq functions depend on a valid card.

How to renew an expired QID step by step

Renewal is normally handled by your sponsor, but you should know the steps so you can chase them.

  • Confirm the situation. Log in to Metrash and check the permit status and any fines attached to your QID.
  • Gather documents. Hukoomi lists a copy of the employer's valid ID for personal sponsorships, or the establishment ID for companies, for the offline route. We did not find an official statement on whether medical checks or fingerprints are needed for a routine renewal, so ask your PRO.
  • Start the renewal. Your sponsor or PRO submits it through the MOI system. Hukoomi describes the online route as Residency, then Renew Residency, on the MOI e-services portal, and says it can also be done through Metrash.
  • Pay the fee. Your sponsor usually pays. Individual sponsors can pay online by card.
  • Track and collect. Watch for the status update, then collect the new card or arrange delivery. Keep the receipt until the card arrives.

If the electronic renewal is rejected or needs special approval, visit an MOI service center in person with your passport and QID.

What it costs

Hukoomi's Renew Residence Permit service, run by the Ministry of Interior, lists QR500 for a wife, children, and family sponsorships, QR1,000 for employees sponsored by companies, institutions, and shops, and QR300 for employees on personal sponsorships, servants, farmers, and sailors. It lists a 20 percent discount for a three-year renewal and QR20 extra for Qatar Post delivery. Hukoomi does not say whether the fee is per year or per renewal, and it does not list any late-renewal charge, so confirm the exact amount in your Metrash account before paying. It also says renewal can be made 3 months before expiry. See our QID renewal guide.

If your employer will not renew it

Renewing an employee's residence is normally the employer's responsibility. If yours is delaying, do these things in order. Ask your PRO for a written status update. Escalate to HR with the QID expiry date and the risks in plain terms. Keep copies of everything you send. If nothing moves, you can raise it through the Ministry of Labour's complaint channels, which are free. Our guide on how to file a labor complaint shows the steps. Also keep evidence that the delay was not your fault, because that matters if a fine is attached.

If you are outside Qatar when it expires

Hukoomi's page does not say whether the holder must be in Qatar, and describes sponsors selecting QID numbers, so a sponsor may be able to start the renewal, but we could not confirm this for someone abroad. Ask your sponsor early, and think about travel timing. Tell your employer as soon as you realize the dates are tight, not after you land. If your permit has already expired while you are abroad, check with your sponsor and the MOI before booking your return, because re-entry rules depend on your permit status.

Real problems people run into

  • My employer says the renewal is in progress but my card is expired. Ask for the application or reference number and check the status yourself in Metrash. An application in progress is not the same as a valid card.
  • My renewal was rejected. Hukoomi says the system displays the rejection reason for a personal number in the Status box, so check it there. We did not find an official list of causes, and some guides mention unpaid fines or details mismatches, which we could not confirm.
  • I only noticed it expired weeks ago. Renew immediately and check the fines shown in Metrash. Waiting makes any daily charge grow.
  • My bank stopped my card. Bring your renewal receipt to the branch, and ask what they will accept until the new card arrives.
  • My QID is close to expiring and I have a flight. Do not fly on an expired or nearly expired permit without confirming your status first.

What to say to your PRO, word for word

A dated written message works better than a phone call, because it gives you a record. Here is a version you can copy and adapt: 'Hello, my Qatar ID ending in 1234 expires on 15 October. Can you confirm whether the renewal has been submitted, share the application reference, and tell me the expected completion date? I need this for my bank and my travel plans. Thank you.' Send it by email or WhatsApp and save the reply. If the answer is vague, follow up after two working days and ask for a specific date.

How long renewal usually takes

When the paperwork is clean and the sponsor's record is in order, a routine renewal is often completed quickly. When it drags, ask your PRO for the specific reason and check the Status box in Metrash rather than accepting that it is just processing time. We found no official processing time. As our own rule of thumb, allow a couple of weeks and start earlier if you have a flight, a lease, or a bank deadline coming up.

Expired QID versus expired passport

A passport that is close to expiring may affect a renewal, but we could not confirm a required minimum validity on the official renewal page. If your passport is close to expiry, ask your PRO or embassy what applies, and consider starting the passport renewal at the same time so the two do not hold each other up.

What to keep with you while you wait

  • The renewal receipt or application reference.
  • A copy of your passport and your expired QID.
  • A short letter from your employer confirming the renewal is in progress, if they can provide one.
  • A screenshot of your permit and fine status in Metrash, taken on the day you check it.

These do not replace a valid card, but they help you explain the situation to a bank, a landlord, or an officer, and they show that you acted quickly.

How to never let it expire again

Put the expiry date in your phone calendar with reminders at 60, 30, and 14 days. Ask your PRO to confirm the renewal has started at the 60 day mark. Check your Metrash account every few months, and keep your registered mobile number active so you can receive the codes you need. Our first week in Qatar checklist explains the residence permit process from the start, which makes the renewal cycle easier to follow.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my Qatar ID expires?+

An expired QID can lead to fines and restrictions on banking, your mobile line, health care access, travel, and government services. Because your card is tied to your residence permit, treat the expiry date as a hard deadline.

Is there a grace period for an expired Qatar ID?+

Older guidance mentioned up to 90 days, but reports in mid-2026 say the period to remain in Qatar after a permit expires or is cancelled is now 14 days, with QAR 10 per day after that. Do not rely on a grace period and check your status in Metrash.

How do I renew an expired Qatar ID?+

Your sponsor or PRO normally submits the renewal through the Ministry of Interior. You can check status and fees in the Metrash app or the MOI e-services portal, and visit an MOI service center if the electronic renewal is rejected.

How much does it cost to renew a Qatar ID?+

Hukoomi lists QR500 for a wife, children, and family sponsorships, QR1,000 for employees sponsored by companies, and QR300 for personal sponsorships, with 20 percent off for three years. Confirm the exact amount in your Metrash account before paying.

Can I travel with an expired Qatar ID?+

It is risky. An expired permit can cause delays or penalties when leaving or re-entering, so confirm your status with your sponsor and the MOI before you book or fly.

What if my employer will not renew my Qatar ID?+

Ask your PRO for a written status update, escalate to HR, and keep copies. If nothing moves you can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour, which is free.
