Registering a Boat or Jet Ski in Qatar: Annual Renewal and Fees
Quick answer
Small craft under 200 tons in Qatar are registered with the Ministry of Transport, and the registration is renewed every year, online through the ministry's e-services. It lists a QAR 1,000 application fee for a private yacht and QAR 100 for a private jet ski. Documents include proof of ownership, an ID copy and valid insurance. We found no confirmed rule on a boat driving licence.

If you own a boat, a jet ski or a small fishing craft, registration is the one step you cannot skip. The rest depends on the vessel and how you use it. This guide uses the Ministry of Transport's page on renewing a craft registration and a search summary of news reports. It does not cover first-time registration, because we found no official page for it. It is general information, not legal advice.

Who renews a craft registration?

The Ministry of Transport page says individuals, private companies and government bodies can renew the registration of small craft under 200 tons, and that it is renewed annually. A search summary of a Qatar Tribune report on a newer vessel decree says registered vessels get unique number plates, cannot sail without them, and must carry the registration certificate and show it on request. We could not read that report ourselves.

How to renew

The page says requests are sent through the ministry website, and its Apply link opens the e-services small craft portal. It lists no numbered steps. For help, it gives the number 16016.

Documents

  • Proof of ownership.
  • A photocopy of the owner's valid ID. The original is shown on site.
  • For a company, a government body or a sports club: a copy of the valid commercial register.
  • A copy of valid insurance and the CRA document the page names.

Fees on the Ministry of Transport page

The page lists these amounts in Qatari riyals:

  • **Private yacht:** QAR 1,000 application, QAR 100 for a checkpoint inspection, QAR 200 for an inspection at a private location.
  • **Private jet ski:** QAR 100 application, QAR 100 checkpoint inspection, QAR 200 private-location inspection.
  • **Fishery, ferry, tourist, passenger and commercial vessels:** QAR 100 application, with the same inspection amounts.

The page gives no penalties for late renewal, so ask the ministry about that.

Do you need a boat driving licence?

A 2013 Peninsula report said a planned law would make boat driving licences mandatory, with the Coasts and Borders Security Department issuing them, and at that time boats were only registered. We could not confirm whether the licence rule took effect, so ask the Coast Guard before you take a boat out. Rules for jet skis and for fishing may differ.

Fishing boats

A procedure wiki (not official, undated) says the Ministry of Municipality's Fishermen Affairs Department issues fishing boat licences, with a small craft registration certificate, a Qatar ID copy and a QR 200 fee, valid for six months. Confirm this on official channels before relying on it.

Before you buy a boat

A boat is a big purchase, and it needs insurance and an owner who can pass the checks. If you are financing it, read our guide to personal loans for expats in Qatar. Ask the seller for the registration certificate and check that the details match the vessel before you pay.

What we could not verify

  • The process and fees for first-time registration and for transfer of ownership.
  • Whether a recreational boat driving licence is now required.
  • Penalties for sailing without valid registration.
