Transferring Schools in Qatar: Transfer Certificate, Deadlines and Attestation
How to move a child between schools in Qatar: the transfer certificate, the January and February deadlines, the school code, and attestation for certificates from abroad.

Moving schools mid-year is stressful. The order of steps matters, because withdrawing before you have a seat can leave a child with no place. This guide follows a Qatar Living article dated 5 August 2026, with a search summary of other sources. We could not read the Ministry of Education's own guidance, so confirm each date and requirement with the school or the Ministry (call 155).
The steps, in order
1. **Get the new place in writing first.** A written offer, acceptance or vacancy letter, before you withdraw your child.
2. **Submit the withdrawal or transfer certificate request** on the current school's form, with the last attendance date. A parent or legal guardian normally submits it.
3. **Ask about the notice period.** It varies. Qatar Living cites one school that processes requests in two working days and Qatar Foundation schools that need one month's notice before term end.
4. **Return school property**, such as books, devices and access cards.
5. **The school prepares the certificate** and updates the child's status in the national system.
6. **Collect the documents and check** the name, grade and academic year.
What documents do you need?
- The transfer certificate, also called a leaving or clearance certificate, from the current school.
- Recent report cards and the previous end of year certificate.
- The student's and parents' Qatar ID and passport copies, and the birth certificate.
- Vaccination or health records and passport photos.
- The new school's application and medical forms, and learning-support records where relevant.
Deadlines for changing schools
Qatar Living reports that switching to a different curriculum is generally allowed until the end of January, and within the same curriculum until the end of February. Registration for students arriving from abroad generally runs until the end of the last week of May, and mid-year registration continues while seats remain. These dates do not guarantee a place. The school still needs a vacancy, and the grade must fit the Ministry's equivalency tables.
The school code and the national system
For a move inside Qatar, the current school needs the new school's Ministry school code, which you get from the new school. The new school's vacancy letter lets the current school start the electronic transfer. Both schools update the National Student Information System (NSIS). Parents can also get transcripts and pass or fail certificates through the Ministry's public services portal, but those do not replace the school's own certificate.
Does the school charge a fee?
Qatar Living says there is no standard national fee for a transfer certificate, and schools may charge for extra transcripts or courier. It says the Ministry's June 2026 fee policy bars unapproved fees. It also says the block on transfers for unpaid fees at private schools was removed from 30 September 2025, although schools can still pursue the debt through legal channels. We could not confirm this with the Ministry.
Certificates from another country
Qatar Living says certificates from outside the GCC usually need four stamps: the school, the education ministry, the foreign ministry, and the Qatari embassy there. From a GCC country it is usually two. It says the 2026 guidance allows two months to complete attestation in some cases. Our guide to document attestation for Qatar explains the process. A 2014 Peninsula report said the same stamps were required, so the rule is not new.
Tips
- Track the January and February dates early.
- Check curriculum fit for older students, such as GCSE, A Level, IB or American diploma.
- Keep digital copies of everything. See our guides to international schools in Qatar and school nurseries.
What we could not verify
- The Ministry's own transfer guidance and the exact 2026 fee policy.
- Whether every school follows the same notice period.
- Attestation rules for each nationality.
