Commercial Agency Termination in Qatar: How It Ends
How a commercial agency contract can end in Qatar under Law No. 8 of 2002, what a 2021 Court of Cassation case decided about renewals and post-termination trademark use, and the statutory compensation figure we could not find.

Commercial agency relationships in Qatar, where a local agent represents a foreign principal's products or brand, are governed principally by Law No. 8 of 2002 regulating commercial agents, as amended by Law No. 2 of 2016, with Commercial Law No. 27 of 2006 adding a further chapter on agencies and their sub-forms. General civil law and consumer protection law can also apply. We did not read any of these laws directly this session; Al Meezan would not load, so everything below is drawn from law firm commentary and a reported Court of Cassation judgment, found through a web search.
This is general information, not legal advice, and the sourcing here is thinner than our usual bar: the main general-framework source is a 2012 article, now over a decade old, and a 2026 secondary guide notes that an earlier version of the relevant law dropped sections on agent limitations, remuneration, and termination. If you are ending or being party to a commercial agency agreement, get current legal advice specific to your contract rather than relying on this page.
How an agency can end
According to the 2012 Squire Patton Boggs Q&A, early termination of a fixed-term or indefinite-term agency contract may only happen by mutual agreement between the principal and the agent, or through the courts. Separately, it reports that the Commercial Law clarifies that an agency also ends automatically where the object of the agency is completed, on the death of the agent or the principal, or in case of bankruptcy or loss of legal capacity by either side.
What a 2021 court case decided
Al Tamimi & Company reported on a Qatari Court of Cassation judgment (No. 600/2021) concerning the lawful cancellation of a commercial agency. Two points from that report stand out. First, the court confirmed that an agency contract can be terminated at its agreed term, regardless of how many times it had been automatically renewed before, so a long history of renewals does not by itself turn a fixed term into an indefinite, hard-to-end relationship. Second, the court awarded the principal QR 1,000,000 against the former agent for continuing to use the principal's trade name and trademark after the agency had ended. That figure is compensation for the agent's post-termination misuse of the brand, not a termination indemnity paid to the agent, and the two should not be confused.
The compensation question we could not answer
A common question when an agency ends is what, if anything, the law requires the principal to pay the agent for ending the relationship, on top of anything agreed in the contract itself. None of the sources we read this session stated a statutory compensation or indemnity formula for this. The 2012 source is dated and may not reflect Law No. 2 of 2016's amendments, and the 2026 secondary guide we found explicitly flags that an earlier law text dropped the sections dealing with this. If your agency contract is ending and compensation is in dispute, this is exactly the point to get a lawyer to check the current text of Law No. 8 of 2002 as amended, rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
Practical points
- Check what your own agency contract says about termination notice, renewal, and any agreed compensation, since the contract terms sit alongside, and may be more specific than, the statutory framework.
- If an agency is ending, stop using the principal's trade name and trademark immediately. The 2021 case shows courts will award real damages for continued use after termination.
- Registration status matters. See how to check a company in Qatar for how commercial registration and trade licenses are verified, and commercial registration renewal for keeping a company's own registration current during a dispute.
What we could not verify
- The current text of Law No. 8 of 2002 as amended by Law No. 2 of 2016, and the Commercial Law's agency chapter, since Al Meezan did not load for us this session.
- Any statutory compensation or indemnity formula for an agent on termination.
- Registration or deregistration steps for a commercial agency with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
