Vehicle Registration Renewal Problem in Qatar? Checks and Fixes
What Hukoomi says you need to renew a Qatar vehicle registration, why a renewal may not go through, what to check first, and where to get help.

Renewal is usually simple, and when it fails the reason is often one of a few checks. This guide follows the Hukoomi renewal page and Fahes's FAQ, both read in September 2026. It tells you what each source says and marks the points we could not confirm officially, especially the effect of traffic fines.
What the official page says you need
Hukoomi's page for the Ministry of Interior service, published 12 January 2021, lists these conditions:
- The vehicle registration should be expired.
- Insurance should be valid. Offline, it should be valid for at least one year for all vehicles, and for more than one year for new vehicles.
- The vehicle should pass the technical inspection if it was manufactured 3 years before the current date.
- Only the technical inspection requires in-person attendance. You can renew through the MOI e-services portal with your smartcard, or through the Metrash mobile app.
Online, Hukoomi says you choose whether to receive the new card in person from the General Directorate of Traffic, or by courier through Qatar Post, and pay any fees. If you choose courier, it says QAR 20 is added to the original fees. The page also says both that no fees are required and that fees differ by vehicle type, so confirm the amount at payment.
Step by step
- Check whether your car needs an inspection. Fahes says a car is due every year after it is 3 years old, at the same time as registration renewal.
- Complete the Fahes inspection. Fahes says a text message follows a pass, telling you to renew the registration and insurance and to log in to Metrash2. That app was switched off on 1 March 2025, so use the current Metrash app or the MOI website.
- Renew your insurance so it is valid.
- Log in to MOI e-services or Metrash, choose the vehicle, choose the delivery option, and pay.
- Save the receipt.
Our guide to a failed Fahes inspection explains the re-inspection cycle if the car did not pass.
Why a renewal may not go through
This is our analysis, based on the conditions above and Fahes's process. It is not an official list of error causes.
- The inspection is not complete or has expired. Fahes says the inspection report is valid for 30 days to complete the Traffic Department procedure.
- The insurance is missing, expired, or does not meet the required period.
- You logged in under the wrong owner or company. Hukoomi says you select personal use or company name for an authorized person.
- The vehicle record does not match. Check the plate, owner, and type.
- Unpaid traffic fines. Some guides say they block renewal, but the official Hukoomi renewal and fines pages we read do not say so, so we cannot confirm it. Check your fines anyway with our guide to checking and paying traffic fines.
- Login problems with the National Authentication System. See our guide to Hukoomi registration problems.
An old exemption you may see
You may see older items saying vehicles are exempt from inspection when renewing. A Hukoomi news item, headed All Vehicles Exempted from Technical Inspection, and a 2020 report of an exemption from March 22, 2020 exist. The current Hukoomi renewal page and Fahes's FAQ both describe the inspection as required for cars 3 years or older, so treat the exemption as out of date unless the Ministry says otherwise.
Where to get help
Hukoomi lists a support line on +974 4406 9999, or 109 within Qatar, on its service pages, and it lists the Traffic Department's headquarters at Madinet Khalifa and its Traffic Service Centers for in-person help. We did not verify opening hours. For an inspection issue, use Fahes's toll free number 800-3835.
Real problems people run into
- I passed inspection but cannot renew online. Confirm the insurance and login type, check fines, and then ask the Traffic Department.
- I did not get the card. Check the delivery option you chose. If you chose courier, ask Qatar Post or the Ministry. We did not verify courier timings.
- The car is under three years old. Hukoomi ties the inspection to vehicles manufactured 3 years before the current date, so a newer car may not need one.
- The registration already expired. We could not verify any late fee or penalty, so check the fee at payment.
- I am abroad. We did not verify remote renewal rules, so ask the Traffic Department.
What we could not verify
- Whether unpaid traffic fines block online renewal.
- The exact fee for each vehicle type.
- Courier delivery times.
- Late renewal penalties and remote renewal rules.
