What You Cannot Bring Into Qatar: Prohibited and Restricted Items at Customs
The items Qatar customs bans outright, the ones that need a permit, and the common surprises for travelers: e-cigarettes, alcohol, pork, medicines, drones and pets.

Most arrival problems at Hamad International Airport come from one bag: something that is normal at home and not allowed here. This guide puts the prohibited and restricted lists in one place, with links to our detailed guides. We used a Doha Guides customs list updated on 11 November 2025, a 2026 news summary of the customs lists and our own earlier research on medicines, drones and cars. The customs authority's own list could not be read, so confirm before you travel. It is general information, not legal advice.
Prohibited items: leave these at home
- Weapons, firearms, ammunition and explosives, with rare exceptions that need Ministry of Defence permission.
- Narcotics and psychotropic substances, including cannabis and khat, and seeds such as poppy and hemp seeds.
- Alcoholic drinks. See alcohol permits in Qatar for what residents may buy through licensed channels.
- Pork meat and related products. Non-Muslims can buy these through licensed outlets.
- Electronic smoking devices, meaning e-cigarettes, e-shisha and heated tobacco. See vaping in Qatar.
- Chewing and sniffing tobacco, such as Sahmmah, Suwaikah and prepared paan.
- Ivory and endangered wildlife products.
- Asbestos and hazardous mineral products, and used tyres.
- Material treated as immoral, in any form, and publications or artwork that conflict with Islamic values or Qatari traditions.
- Radar jammers and unauthorized communication or surveillance devices.
- Forged currency and goods that infringe copyright or trademarks.
Restricted items: allowed with conditions
| Item | Condition (reported) |
|---|---|
| Personal items and gifts | Up to QAR 3,000, not in commercial quantities |
| Tobacco | Up to 400 cigarettes or equivalent for adults, value within QAR 3,000 |
| Medicines | Essential personal medicine, limited quantity, with a prescription |
| Cash and valuables | QAR 50,000 or more, or equivalent, must be declared |
| Pets | Import licence needed, some dog breeds restricted |
| Drones | Registration and permission needed, see the drone guide |
| Cars | Customs duty and age limits apply |
For medicines read bringing medication into Qatar, because controlled medicines need a permit and some common prescription drugs are on a controlled list. For drones see the drone law in Qatar. For vehicles see importing a car into Qatar. For gift and cash limits see the duty free allowance.
Common surprises
- **Vapes and heated tobacco:** many travelers assume these are fine. They are on the prohibited list.
- **Prescription medicine without a prescription:** pack it in the original box with a doctor's letter.
- **Books, films and magazines:** content that conflicts with Islamic values can be confiscated. Digital media on a phone or laptop is also covered by the wording "in any media".
- **Gifts for family:** items beyond personal use, or above QAR 3,000, can be taxed or questioned.
- **Food:** pork products are prohibited, and animal products and pet food need permits and health certificates.
- **Religious items:** we found no clear list for religious books or items, so check if you are carrying many.
What happens if you bring a banned item?
Customs scans checked and carry-on bags at every port of entry. The usual outcome described by sources is confiscation, a fine or prosecution, depending on the item. Drug charges are the most serious and carry heavy penalties. Declare anything you are unsure about. Customs officers at the port have the final say.
A simple checklist before you fly
1. Check the customs authority's lists for the latest.
2. Remove any vape, heated tobacco, chewing tobacco and alcohol.
3. Carry medicines in original packaging with a prescription.
4. Declare cash and valuables above the threshold.
5. Check your visa and entry route, see visa free entry, visa on arrival and Hayya.
6. Read the local rules on dress and photos: dress code in Qatar and photographing people in Qatar.
What we could not verify
- The General Authority of Customs' own current list.
- Penalty amounts for each item.
- How strictly the media rule is applied to files on phones and laptops.
