If a Worker Dies in Qatar: What the Employer Must Do and Who Receives the Dues
Quick answer
Under Labour Law Article 55, if a worker dies during employment for any reason, the employer must deposit all remuneration, entitlements and the gratuity with the court within fifteen days. Under Article 108, if the death is during work or because of it, the employer must report it immediately to the police and the Department.

This is a hard subject, and families often do not know who holds the money or where to ask. This guide follows Articles 55 and 108 of Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 as shown on Al Meezan, Qatar's official legal portal, which we read in October 2026. It is not legal advice, and we say below what we could not check.

Deposit of dues with the court (Article 55)

If the worker dies during employment for whatever reason, the employer must, within fifteen days of the date of death, deposit with the court any remuneration or entitlements due, in addition to the gratuity. The deposit record must include a detailed report showing how the amounts were calculated, and a copy goes to the Department.

Who receives the money

Article 55 says the court distributes the deposited amount among the heirs of the deceased worker under Islamic Sharia or the personal law applicable in the worker's country. If the person entitled is not identified, the court transfers the amount to the State's public fund after three years from the date of deposit.

Reporting a death at work (Article 108)

If a worker dies during work or because of it, or is injured, Article 108 says the employer or their representative must report it immediately to the police and the Department. The report includes the worker's name, age, profession, address, nationality, a brief description of the accident and circumstances, and the aid or treatment given. The police then investigate at once, take statements, clarify the relation of the accident to the work, and send copies to the Department and the employer. The Department may ask for more investigation.

For families

This is our own advice, not part of the law.

  • Ask the employer for the date of death and the court deposit record, and keep copies of the calculation report.
  • Keep the worker's contract, payslips and bank statements. Our end of service calculator guide explains how gratuity is worked out.
  • For a work-related death or injury, also read injured at work in Qatar.
  • If the employer misses the fifteen days or the report, contact the Ministry of Labour, as described in how to file a labor complaint.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming dues are paid directly to a relative. Article 55 routes them through the court.
  • Not asking for the calculation report.
  • Leaving the claim unnoticed. Article 55 provides for transfer to the public fund after three years if the entitled person is not identified.

What we could not verify

  • How heirs prove their status to the court and what documents are required in practice.
  • Compensation for a work-related death under the separate injury provisions, which this page does not cover in full.
  • Whether later amendments or ministerial decisions changed Articles 55 and 108, and how the rules apply to domestic workers, public sector staff or free zones.
  • Repatriation of the body and who pays, which these articles do not address.
